Message from the Executive Director

Pardon Our Progress yellow sign.Spring is in the air! It’s a time to refresh and renew. We will start to smell fresh paint, flowers, and compost fertilizer wafting through the campus. The work that our Facilities Management folks perform to make this campus beautiful, including all of the behind-the-scenes work, is truly appreciated. We continue to receive many compliments for the professionalism, dedication, and expertise they demonstrate each day.

It has been a little over one year since I started here at the 糖心传媒, and looking in the rear-view mirror, we have accomplished a lot together. A few examples include establishing standardized uniforms, department gatherings including our inaugural cornhole championships (congratulations David Sellers and Andy Bullock), the implementation of our new Computerized Maintenance Management System (Brightly), and the countless number of work orders and projects. It is truly an exciting time to be here at UE. Our enrollment numbers are encouraging, many vacancies in our department have been filled, and we have successfully navigated through various events, challenges, and other distractions that came our way.

We have many great employees in this department, all well-deserving of the praise and compliments they receive. Highlighted in this edition is the annual Facilities Management Employee of the Year, Jake Oberhausen. He was recognized for his exemplary performance throughout the year. Keep up the great work, Jake, and thank you for representing us so well!

After working in facilities departments for the past 20 years, it has become very clear to me that this profession attracts those who are great at making the best of challenging situations and who always rise to the occasion when things are difficult. These jobs require a lot of problem solving, innovative thinking, good humor, and a strong desire to make positive things happen. I want to thank you all for making UE a great place to work. It has made my transition to this community easy.

Mike Averett
Executive Director, Office of Facilities Management

Groundskeeping

The Groundskeeping crew has an important job of tending to 94 acres. A total of eight members maintain all campus landscapes, sidewalks, parking lots, athletic fields, lawns, and trees. It takes a lot of knowledge to keep up this much land, too. The team includes two leads, one mechanic, and five groundskeepers. Among them are:

  • Two master gardeners
  • Two Indiana-accredited horticulturists
  • Two state-licensed pesticide applicators
  • Two studying for core pesticide certification

Bob Dale, Assistant Director of Facilities Management, supervises Groundskeeping. Bob holds the certifications above, is a licensed arborist, and is a certified Education Facility Professional through the Association of Physical Plant Administrators.

Fun Facts:

  • Groundskeeping collects approximately 700 cubic yards of leaves annually. A small portion is composted for campus use, but the majority is delivered to a local facility and composted for public sale.
  • The crew picks up litter to start every day and removes over 1,000 pounds per year.
  • Kevin Crawford, Senior Grounds Mechanic, maintains a vehicle and equipment fleet that consists of equipment as old as a 1962 tractor and as new as a 2015 pickup.

Campus Maintenance

Did you know our Campus Maintenance staff is responsible for the following?

  • 750,000 square feet of academic space
  • 380,000 square feet of dorm housing space
  • 34,000 square feet of Greek Life space
  • 72 houses surrounding the University

All that square footage certainly keeps this group busy! The team includes four maintenance technicians, one heating and air conditioning technician, and one electrician.

Fun Facts:

  • All of the above spaces include restrooms. Koch Center for Engineering and Science has 33 toilets and 13 urinals alone.
  • Campus-wide, the academic buildings have a total of 251 toilets and 82 urinals. Many more are in the residential spaces. That’s a lot of porcelain responsibility!

Building Services

Building Services is an area of Facilities Management that encompasses student and special events, minor maintenance on campus, and lock management for the University. This area also oversees the University’s contracts with local pest control, elevator service, and minor repairs requiring a contractor.

The Structural Maintenance Technician (Locksmith) is responsible for all the locks and lock management on campus, which include doors, lockers, mailboxes, and cabinets. Almost every door also has some type of closing or exit device that needs adjustment or attention. While the Structural Maintenance Technician is walking through a door, even though you may not notice it, he is inspecting the door’s opening, closing, latching, and overall function.

Building Services Technicians are responsible for the execution of events on and around campus. They can be found moving tables and chairs one minute and painting a wall in a classroom or dorm the next. It would not be surprising to see one of them on a scissor lift changing light bulbs, ceiling tiles, or arranging the international flags in Eykamp Hall.

The busiest time for this area is the week before and after Freshman Move-In. They are responsible for setting up all tables and chairs for Welcome Week, the Student Organizational Fair, and Academic Convocation.

Building Services includes, from left to right: Zac Brock, Fred Wilson, Tyler Roth, and Kevon Cabell. Brightly Asset Essentials

Our office asked you to do your part, and you have done a great job! In August 2022, we transitioned to Asset Essentials, a next-generation software from Brightly, for work order management.
