The Season of Celebration and Change

Wrapping Up the Year on a High Note

As we approach the end of the year, the festive season is upon us, bringing with it a sense of joy and excitement. With Christmas just around the corner, there’s a lot to look forward to as we embrace the colder months and all the wonderful things they bring.

In our facilities, we are excited to welcome several new faces to our team. Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Dani Keith, our new Administrative Assistant; Nathan Wagner, who is joining us as an HVAC Trainee Maintenance Technician; Timmy Roberts, Maintenance Technician; and Chris McCormick, Maintenance Technician. We’re thrilled to have them on board and look forward to all the positive contributions they’ll make to our team! Speaking of the team, a huge congratulations to Jim McDonald for being named SAA Employee of the Month for October!

Celebrating Recent and Upcoming Facilities Projects

We are proud of the incredible projects completed this year and are excited about those still in progress. Recently, we wrapped up the new Qdoba at Lincoln Commons, which has already become a popular spot on campus. Currently, we’re hard at work on the Student Legacy and Sports Performance Center, a project that promises to make a lasting impact on our campus community. We look forward to seeing these projects enhance our facilities and benefit everyone at the university!

A Special Thanks for UE Gives Back

We would like to take a moment to thank everyone who participated in this year’s UE Gives Back event. With over 60 participants, we had a record turnout of Aces employees and students who came together to freshen up our campus and give back to the community. The teamwork and dedication shown during this event truly made a difference, and we are so grateful for everyone who volunteered their time and energy to make our campus a better place. Your commitment to the university and the greater community is truly inspiring, and we can’t wait to see the continued positive impact of this wonderful initiative in the future.

Winter on Walnut: A Holiday Wonderland

One of the most anticipated events of the season is Winter on Walnut, which will bring festive cheer to our community in a big way. Winter On Walnut will be held on Wednesday, December 4th from 5-8 PM. Look for sparkling holiday decorations and exciting surprises going up around Walnut Street very soon. This year, we’ll be transforming the area into a winter wonderland, with an Ice Rink, beautifully decorated Christmas Trees, and much more to enjoy. Be sure to bundle up and bring your family and friends to enjoy the festivities!

Please note that Winter on Walnut will close Walnut Street on Wednesday, December 4th from 8 AM through 10 PM. as we prepare for the event. We encourage you to plan for any potential detours and take advantage of the seasonal charm that will fill the streets.

Utility Conservation Tips for the Holidays

Energy Saving logoWith the holiday season often bringing cooler temperatures, it is a good time to think about conserving energy and saving on utility costs. Here are a few easy steps you can take to help reduce campus and your own home utility bills while staying cozy:

  • Turn down the thermostat: Lower your thermostat by a few degrees when you are not home or while you are sleeping. You can also use a programmable thermostat to ensure your home stays comfortable without wasting energy. Our University maintenance staff will lower the temperatures during the winter break in many Administrative and Academic spaces.
  • Close Windows: Please ensure that all windows in offices, bathrooms, classrooms, and other areas are closed before leaving for winter break. Leaving windows open can lead to a chaotic environment, including risks such as frozen pipes, which can cause significant disruptions and damage.
  • Seal gaps and cracks: Check around windows and doors for drafts. Sealing these leaks can keep the cold out and the warmth in, reducing your heating costs.
  • Use energy-efficient decorations and timers: When putting up your Christmas lights, opt for LED lights, which use significantly less energy and last longer than traditional incandescent bulbs. Use timers to turn lights on and off to help conserve energy
  • Unplug electronics: Many electronics and appliances continue to draw power even when turned off. Unplug items like computers, chargers, televisions, and kitchen appliances when they are not in use.
  • Turn Off Lights: When you leave for the day or for a meeting at midday turn off lights.

By following these simple steps, you can help the University to conserve energy and enjoy your own holiday season without breaking the bank on your utility bills. Small changes can add up to big savings!

Winter Weather Preparedness

As winter approaches, our Grounds Department is ready to keep campus accessible and safe with a carefully planned snow removal action strategy. Priority is given to clearing primary sidewalks, especially those that provide essential access to campus buildings, allowing everyone to navigate campus more easily. When classes are in session, the first priority is always these main paths. Once crews are confident these key routes will stay open, they will begin clearing additional sidewalks. This approach helps ensure a safe, clear campus environment during inclement weather, whether classes are in session or not. If you find an unsafe location or area that could use some help, please call our facilities offices 812-488-2775.

We’ll see you out at Winter on Walnut, and don't forget to check out the new homes and the utility-saving tips. Here's to a wonderful holiday season and a bright year ahead!
