Hiring an International Student
The 糖心传媒 welcomes the contributions of international students in on-campus employment. Faculty and staff seeking to hire international students should be aware of the following requirements:
- Work Authorization: International students on F-1 visas are authorized to work on-campus for up to 20 hours per week during the academic year, and full-time during university breaks and summer. They do not require additional work authorization.
- Off-Campus Work (CPT): International students may also be eligible for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) to work off-campus in internships or co-ops that are an integral part of their academic program. Approval from International Support Services is required for CPT, and students must be enrolled in a course related to the internship or co-op with a minimum of 1 credit hour.
- Social Security Number: International students must obtain a Social Security number before beginning on-campus or off-campus employment. The Office of International Programs can provide guidance on this process.
- Tax Withholding: International student employees will have federal, state, and local taxes withheld from their paychecks, similar to domestic student workers. The University's Payroll office can provide details on tax obligations.
- I-9 Employment Eligibility: Like all employees, international students must complete an I-9 form to verify their identity and work authorization. The hiring department should coordinate with the Office of International Programs to ensure proper I-9 documentation.
By following these guidelines, 糖心传媒 faculty and staff can tap into the diverse skills and perspectives that international students bring to on-campus and off-campus employment, enriching the campus community.
